My New Old Descoware

I almost left this 1 quart Descoware sauce pan at the Salvation Army store on Sierra Highway because it was pretty shabby looking.  Stained inside and out.  I hadn’t heard of Descoware before, but it looked like good stuff…enameled cast iron, which I’ve been curious about.

The price of new Le Creuset and the like has kept me from jumping in. A 1-quart French oven is selling on Amazon for $94.00 right now.  I decided that it was worth a $7.50 gamble to see if I could clean this one up to the point I’d be happy using it.

Wow, I wish I’d taken a before photo.  I used a Scotch Brite pad and some baking soda and this baby is shining now.

Apparently, Julia Child used this stuff on her television show in the sixties.  I found a website for Fans of Descoware–gotta love the Internet!–that says that it’s valued by people who use it, but hasn’t become expensive in a collectible sense.  I think that the lid and pan are probably from different sets, but I don’t mind.  It’s like a sunny day in the California poppy fields near our home on the edge of  the Antelope Valley, CA.

I had a fennel bulb in the fridge, so I decided to try braising it in a little chicken broth, white wine and garlic.  Finished with a little sprinkling of Parmesan cheese that I browned under the broiler at the last minute.

It was the first time I’d braised anything, and it was yummy.  I ate it right out of the pot while watching a behind the scenes look at Downton Abbey.  The only problem was that it stayed so hot it was hard to wait until it wouldn’t burn my mouth!

It cleaned right up again after cooking.  Fun Monday find!

Peach Blossom Sunday

Bee, up to his neck in blossoms.

Yesterday would have been my dad’s birthday, but he’s been gone since 1990.   He’d have liked to have known that I moved outside of the city.  I always knew 62 was young to die, but it feels today like he’s missed a lot he would have enjoyed.

Anger Cake, Anyone?

When I saw this cake in the case at a local grocery store on Valentine’s morning, I felt like I’d just walked onto one of those television crime scenes.  The first thing that came to mind was like something a detective would say while standing over the body, “There was a lot of anger here.”

I loved you.  You shoved cookies in my mouth.

I sent this to the hilarious Cake Wrecks, but I guess she’s seen it all before.

Book Review: Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Loved it, loved it. A fun, compelling read.

It got me started thinking about the Young Adult category and how I feel a little funny about picking up a YA novel.

But books like this remind me that if there had been a YA category in the mid-20th Century we might have missed classics like “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Catcher in the Rye,” “A Separate Peace,” and “A Member of the Wedding,” just because their protagonists are kids.

It can be a powerful and moving perspective in the right hands.

Happy Sad Art at Amoeba

We went to the amazing Amoeba Music on Sunday to pick up a gift for a friend and of course found some things for ourselves.  Including the latest/last? Dave Carter and Tracy Grammar CD, Little Blue Egg.

This painting is cool and happy-making, but it is a little sad that it’s done on the spines of stacks of books.  Yipes.

We were on our way to possibly the coolest surprise party ever.  The birthday girl, a wonderful playwright, thought she was going to be on a panel discussing the collaboration between playwrights and actors.   What actually happened was a reading of excerpts from her plays, done by terrific actors.  We laughed, we cried, we ate cake.

Valen-Tiny Update

Gorgeous roses from Hydra.  Carrying them around the house putting them in whatever room I’m in.  The dining table can’t have all the fun!

Valentine’s Day hike around the neighborhood.  Lovely clouds across the valley.  Chilly but not too chilly.

Pair of ravens that let us get quite close before taking off.

New top shelf in the pantry!  Quel romantique!   Now Happy Together keeps running through my brain!
