Hawking Our Wheres

The big news around the homestead this week has been the arrival of what we believe to be a Red Tailed Hawk.  Kitty was sitting in the back yard reading a book when this fellow landed atop one of our cedars.   I didn’t have the presence of mind to grab my camera in time so Hydra and I took off down the fire trail behind the house to get a better look.  I didn’t have my best telephoto lens on the camera, but got these highly cropped shots.

Probably responsible for the  small pool of blood on the stepping stones in the back yard.  It’s easy to have mixed feelings about this creature.  The ravens don’t share our ambiguity.  They dive bombed him for twenty minutes till he finally flew away from one of the pines in the center of our neighborhood.

The Cooper’s Hawk who has been around for a while takes a break in the shade down by the mail boxes.  Kitty saw this one swoop in and out of the back yard after a smaller bird.  Not sure if it was successful.
