A Walk in The Woods

Beautiful decay.

Spent  a wonderful afternoon tromping around the woods with Kitty and Pegerty.  This is the territory of my early youth. So many memories spring up, of Kitty or my brothers and sister explaining how the natural world works.

That must have been a fabulous place to grow up. Those white flowers are very pretty. I’ve never seen them before but I looked them up in my field guide and I think they are bloodroot. Nice find!

I thought maybe bloodroot too, but the leaves seemed different. Maybe they unfold later?

We had a woods across the field that was part of my grandmother’s farm, where we could go together or alone and walk the paths, build forts, etc. There was one particular hill where the early wildflowers were abundant. The woods is still there, but neighbors own it now.

Ha! Such a good citizen to alert the DNR to the presumed insect plague! And so neat to find out we obviously actually DO have the Pilaeted Woodpecker around here! (And yes, seabluelee, it is the bloodroot flower….we’d have known that if we’d crushed a bit of vein with a fingernail.)
